Read the Signs

Excel makes my mind shut down.

Worse than that, when I see an Excel sheet, my thoughts instantly disappear, leaving only a cloud-shape, where my brain used to be.

I’ve worked with people who prefer Excel. These people consumed information and data in a completely different way. Organised, Efficient, Compartmentalised.

I’ve worked with other people who have their entire work life stuffed into a notepad. Or, rather, 38 notepads. With coloured tabs. And so many post-it notes that their notebooks look like a paper version of the Honey Monster.

Everyone consumes information in different ways. And everyone consumes entertainment in different ways.too.

You have the binger, who will reel off 28 episodes of a newly-found series in the course of a night.

You have the parent, who will squeeze in an hour of comfort TV before falling horizontally into their couch.

But there’s one common strand between us all, no matter the chasm of disparity.

We all want our content, data and information to be EASY TO FIND.

For an Excel sheet, handy tabs at the bottom of the sheet will indicate what current page or section of data is currently confusing you.

And for entertainment, take Netflix for example.

You can manually search for it. There are sections that use machine learning to offer similar shows that you have already consumed. There are Top10 lists, there are genres to sift through.

It doesn’t matter how your brain is wired, you want things to be signposted. To show you where to go, what to do next.

Your website may well have the most relevant, interesting and valuable content – but if it’s hidden underneath a menu that isn’t intuitive and clearly labelled, then your site will sink.

When was the last time you gave your site a healthcheck? Looked at what pages are being visited the most? Which ones have the longest time spent on them?

Are they the ones occupying the most valuable real estate on your site?

And those menu tabs – are they indicative of what people can find when it’s clicked on? Or is it just what everyone else uses?

You can tweak, tailor and create as much bespoke content as you like – but EVERYBODY wants a map that is easy to follow.

No one likes getting lost. Give some thought to your menu, your signposting and what pages deliver the most value to your readers. Then give them a lift in terms of prominence.
